Technology demonstrations are a means of evaluating the merit of technologies that are reaching the prototype stage. Demonstrations expose the technologies to the environment in which the technology must be operated successfully. Demonstrations also promote the deployment and utilization of new technologies through observations and participation by pipeline operators, equipment vendors, standards organizations, and pipeline safety officials. Demonstrations are just one stage in a technology transfer process but can be considered a major milestone for achieving an ultimate research goal. PHMSA will organize and hold future technology demonstrations when appropriate to assist road mapping and technology transfer efforts.
Below are the Technology Demonstrations that PHMSA has been involved with.
- Field Demonstration Report Enhancing Direct Assessment by Inspection through Coatings and Buried Regions of Non-Piggable Pipelines - EMAT Ultrasonics, Inc., August 23, 2007, San Luis Obispo, California
- Guided Wave Ultrasonic Inspection of Cased Crossings - Northeast Gas Association/NYSEARCH Test Bed, July 17-19, 2006, Binghamton, New York
- Internal Inspection Benchmarking Demonstration - Battelle's Pipeline Simulation Facility, January 9-13, 2006 in Columbus, Ohio
- Appendix D, Pipe and Anomaly Configuration for the Phase II Benchmarking of Emerging Pipeline Inspection Technologies. [5.4 MB]
- Remote Sensing of Natural Gas Leaks - Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center, September 13-17, 2004 in Casper, Wyoming
- Internal Inspection of non-Piggable Gas Pipelines - Battelle's Pipeline Simulation Facility, September 13-17, 2004 in Columbus, Ohio
