Main Objective

The project addressees ECD Assessments for cased crossings, severity ranking of indirect inspection indications and potential measurements on pavement. Specifically, the project will identify assessment technologies for shorted, electrolytically-coupled and electrolytically isolated conditions of cased crossings; to better define severity-ranking classification criteria for data and to develop procedures for recording pipe-to-soil potential and CDVG measurements on pipelines under paving.

Public Abstract

The objective of the proposed research is to expand, improve, and strengthen the application of ANSI/NACE Standard RP-0502-2002, Pipeline External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Methodology. The research will focus on three specific research areas:
  1. Cased Crossings: The goal of this research is to evaluate existing tools used to determine the integrity of carrier pipe inside cased crossings and to develop an ECDA methodology for cased carrier pipe. Existing technologies will be evaluated and results from ECDA Indirect Inspections and In-Line Inspections will be integrated and evaluated. Project 241
  2. Severity Ranking of ECDA Indirect Inspection Indications: The goal of the research is to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of ECDA Indirect Inspection indications severity ranking by evaluating data from completed projects. The evaluation will facilitate revision of present ranking criteria to improve accuracy and consistency of severity ranking. Project 242
  3. Potential Measurements on Paved Areas: The goal of the research is to develop tools that will facilitate accurate measurement of potentials on uncased pipe underneath pavement. Laboratory testing and field verifications will be used to develop and refine the tools. Project 243
