Question: What type of pressure test can be used to assess pipeline integrity?
Answer: The integrity management rule requires that pressure tests be conducted according to the requirements of 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart J (192.921(a)(2), 192.937(c)(2)). This test uses a medium of liquid, air, natural gas, or inert gas to raise the pressure inside a pipe to a prescribed level for a prescribed length of time. (An operator must use test pressures specified in Table 3 of section 5 of ASME/ANSI B31.8S to justify an extended reassessment interval in accordance with 192.939. See FAQ 207).
